The name Dog the Bounty Hunter is for the TV reality show featuring bail bondsman Duane “Dog” Chapman. Leland is Dog Chapman’s third son and was instrumental in the capture of Max Factor heir and serial rapist Andrew Luster.
Leland entered into the business of capturing bail jumpers and fugitives as he opened “Da Kine Bail Bonds” in Hawaii. Together with his father Dog, they form a family team to capture these fugitives from the law. Though business has been good and the show has provided them with great exposure, the family of bail bondsmen were arrested concerning the capture of Andrew Luster. The case stems from the televised capture in Mexico of the fugitive Luster and the violation of the Chapmans of Mexico’s anti bounty hunting laws.
Leland was released on $100,000 bail and was ordered to wear electronic anklets and surrender their passports pending resolution of the extradition case. The defense team they had mustered was impressive, with even one of Luster’s victims assisting them in the case. Ultimately, all charges were dropped and the Chapmans were allowed to return to their business.
