Her love life was not as successful as her career. She was married to Dane Witherspoon from 1986 to 1988. She soon became involved with Sean Penn on 1989. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Dylan and a son, Hopper. They were married on April 27, 1996.
On April 2008, the couple announced that they were to divorce but requested it be dismissed. On several occasions this year, they were filing for legal separation and joint custody for their children but only to find it dismissed.
